ANJ EXPORTS EDAMAME TO JAPAN

11 May 2021

Jakarta - PT Austindo Nusantara Jaya Tbk (ANJ) has operated its vegetable business since 2015 through its subsidiary PT Gading Mas Indonesia Teguh (GMIT) in Jember, East Java. GMIT cultivates and produces edamame, a high-protein and antioxidant green bean belonging to the soybean family.

ANJ, in collaboration with Asia Foods Group, has begun exporting frozen edamame as shown by the shipment of 21 tons of edamame to the Japanese market at the end of April 2021. Asia Foods Group, which specializes in processing and selling frozen edamame, is a major player in the edamame export market with operations in Japan, the United States, and Australia, and is currently expanding into the European market.

According to Lin Chu Hong (Koji), COO of Asia Foods Group, Indonesia has a tropical climate that is ideal for edamame cultivation. "I am confident that, by leveraging our experience and client network in multiple countries, we will elevate GMIT to the next level in the sustainable agriculture business model, and encourage us to lead the industry in the future."

Koji added that Asia Foods Groups is proud to be able to invest and do business in Indonesia as well as collaborate with ANJ through GMIT to achieve a shared goal. Asia Foods Group collaborates with ANJ by sharing the technical knowledge, including edamame frozen factory development and market expansion in the Asia Pacific region.

According to Erwan Santoso, President Director of GMIT, Japan is an export destination that places a high value on food safety and quality. Therefore, the traceability of the distributed food products become an essential requirement. In this case, the exported edamame must be of excellent quality. Erwan also mentioned that edamame comes in a variety of quality levels. Edamame that does not meet export standards are developed into processed edamame products.

"If this edamame export goes well, we hope to increase the export target every year. That is why we strive to produce high-quality seeds and invite more local farmers to collaborate with GMIT. Our team's collaboration with farmers includes assisting during the planting and harvesting periods so that farmers can produce quality edamame, which GMIT then purchases from them and markets the product for both export and domestic markets," Erwan added.

Currently, the GMIT factory's production capacity is 6,000 tons per year, with Japan as the primary export destination due to the well-developed frozen edamame market there. ANJ also intends to expand its market into the United States and Canada.

Prior to entering the export market, GMIT produced fresh edamame for the Indonesian market such as Bali, East Java, Jakarta, and Central Java. By the end of 2020, fresh edamame production increased 32.5 percent year-on-year from 710 tonnes to 941 tonnes. GMIT also produces frozen edamame (under the brand ‘Edashi’) and frozen peeled edamame that are sold domestically.
